Less-than-truckload carrier YRC Worldwide said Monday that Maynard Skarka is retiring as president of Yellow Transportation and will be replaced by Mike Smid, president of YRC’s North American Transportation unit.
Skarka, who was named president of Yellow in January 2007, had been with Yellow since 1982. The North American Transportation division, which Smid has headed since October, includes Yellow.
Smid, who was previously president of YRC’s Roadway unit, will continue to lead the North American unit.
“Our focus must be to provide the service quality our customers expect while we carefully manage cost and build for the future,” Smid said in a memo to employees, Bloomberg reported.
Smid said YRC is stepping up efforts to “change our current growth trajectory,” according to Bloomberg.
Separately, the company said Tuesday that proxy materials for its 2008 annual shareholders meeting, set for May 15, are available on its Web site in accordance with the new notice rules set by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The rules allow companies to furnish proxy materials to stockholders via the Internet as an alternative to the traditional approach of delivering printed copies to each stockholder.
YRC Worldwide is ranked No. 4 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
