Smith Transport Inc. has selected Todd Smith as president of the Roaring Spring, Pa.-based trucking company, succeeding Barry Smith.

Barry Smith will continue to serve as chairman and CEO, a position he has held since forming the company in July 1983.

“I will continue to stay fully engaged in this great company,” he said in a message to employees Jan. 22.

Barry said that he has known Todd for more than 15 years and “has great confidence that his knowledge and innovative concepts will create great benefit.”

Todd and Barry Smith are not related.

Todd Smith previously served as chief operating officer of Decker Truck Line in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and has 25 years of executive management experience in the transportation industry.

Barry Smith describes Todd as someone who “has established himself as a leader with integrity and exceptional insight” that has led to the growth of an array of companies that have called upon him in the past.

“The board and I are confident that Todd will advance the mission and vision of our company, to allow it to excel in the dedication to employees, customers and our community,” Smith said.

Smith Transport is employee-owned and operates a fleet of nearly 700 company-owned tractors, 36 straight trucks and 2,400 trailers, based on registration data on file with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The company provides dry truckload and dedicated contract carriage services. It also operates a large warehousing business with about 3 million square feet of space in Pennsylvania and Indiana.
