Weather forecasters posted winter storm warnings across the Northern Plains Monday, as a cold system threatened the region as it moved south and east, the Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, heavy snows in the Northeast led to a nearly 60-vehicle pileup on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire Sunday, closing the highway in one direction for five hours, AP said.

Two tractor-trailers and a bus were among the vehicles in the incident, although there were no fatalities, AP reported.

Forecasters called for frigid arctic air to move south from Canada and spread snow into Montana, the Dakotas and Minnesota before marching into moving to the Midwest, South and Northeast by the end of the week, AP said.

The National Weather Service reported 8 inches of snow in Michigan and issued a winter storm watch across the state for Monday night into Tuesday, AP reported.

Meanwhile in the Pacific Northwest, where Interstate 5 was closed in Washington state last week due to heavy flooding, areas remained on alert with three flooded rivers in Washington, AP said.

National Guard troops were deployed in Lewis County, Wash., which was one of the state’s hardest hit counties by flooding, AP said, citing the state’s Division of Emergency Management.
