img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>Port terminal operators on both the East and West Coasts have begun to respond to truckers’ and shippers’ requests that they stay open longer to reduce congestion and allow drayage companies to do more deliveries a day, a port group said.

Maher Terminals at the Port of New York and New Jersey announced it had expanded its hours of operation by seven hours a day and the Waterfront Coalition said it was gathering support for a pilot project of expanded hours at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Waterfront Coalition Executive Director Robin Lanier said she thought keeping port gates open longer was a solution that harbors on both coasts were considering to alleviate the chronic congestion they face.
