Some States Restrict Idling, Leaving Drivers in the Cold

f almost a dozen states that have regulations restricting prolonged truck-engine idling, only a few loosen those rules in the interest of driver health and comfort on cold winter months.

The cold Northeast has a concentration of states with engine-idling rules, with only three states that ease the rules to allow idling to keep engine cabs warm.

In New Hampshire, for example, the state allows trucks to idle for five minutes before facing a penalty, but allows longer idle times when the temperature dips below freezing — 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
