States Consider Early Tests of Driver Fingerprint Checks

espite the fact the Transportation Security Administration announced a delay in using fingerprints to check the backgrounds of truck drivers permitted to haul hazardous materials, some states’ pilot projects may begin the process before the new deadline.

TSA said in its April 6 announcement delaying the fingerprint background checks that it would use pilot projects to begin the process sooner and develop procedural guidelines.

TSA spokeswoman Andrea Fuentes told Transport Topics April 13 that the agency would “work to establish pilot projects with states that are ready [to collect and submit fingerprints] before Jan. 31.”



The agency is in “constant contact” with states to develop the fingerprinting rules and procedures for the collection and transmission of data, Fuentes said.
