wo key national associations have called on the Transportation Security Administration to delay implementing a new requirement for criminal background checks before certifying commercial drivers to haul hazardous materials.

Both the National Tank Truck Carriers, the members of which need the hazmat endorsements on commercial driver licenses, and the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, who issue CDLs, said they have asked TSA to postpone the fast approaching deadlines.

Current holders of hazardous materials endorsements must pass FBI background checks by Sept. 2. By Nov. 2, applicants for new or renewed endorsements must pass FBI fingerprint-based background checks.
