Teamsters, DOE to Train New Truckers

An alliance between the Teamsters union and the Department of Energy will put displaced government employees back to work as truck drivers.

A $1.2 million grant from the DOE’s Office of Worker and Community Transition will go toward building the Nevada Test Site Truck Driver School at a federal nuclear facility in southern Nevada and retraining at least 62 former test site employees who were victims of funding cuts.

The school will be run by the Teamsters and staffed by instructors from Local 631 of Las Vegas. The first applicants will start training in November.

Each six-week course will have six workers who will learn the basic skills of trucking in order to earn their commercial driver license. Additional specialty instruction, such as how to operate garbage trucks, water trucks, flatbeds and cement mixers, will also be offered.
