Teamsters May Review Election Role

Workplace shootings, driver hours of service, ergonomic regulations and sexual harassment are among the issues on the agenda as trucking’s top labor specialists gather this week for the 14th annual conference of the North American Trucking Industrial Relations Association Nov. 12-15 in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.

The meeting will feature a speech by C. Thomas Keegel, general secretary-treasurer of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. It will be the first time in many years that the Teamsters have had a representative at the Natira meeting.

Executive Director Herve Aitken said he expects Keegel to comment on the role that the Teamsters and other trade unions played in Al Gore’s bid for the White House.

“If Gore goes on to win, he owes it to the black and union vote,” Aitken said. At press time, the presidential election result was still undecided.
