The Teamsters union took several steps to bolster its three-week-old strike against Overnite Transportation Co., increasing strike benefits from $55 to $100 a week and asking local unions to contribute to a special Overnite strike fund.
In a show of labor solidarity, AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney announced a $100,000 contribution to the Overnite strike fund. He also called on affiliated unions to support the cause.
“We are operating as usual,” an Overnite spokesman said Nov. 11. “The strikers are predominately employees of other unionized carriers. It’s a headache, but that’s all.”
