Wash. Ports to Address Emissions

PeopleNet Upgrades g3 Computer

PeopleNet, which makes on-board computers for heavy-duty trucks, said it upgraded its g3 computer, allowing carriers to see in-cab information on a wireless handheld device, the company said.

PeopleNet, Minneapolis, said it developed the application for g3 computers in cooperation with TrueContext, which make software for handheld devices.

Brian McLaughlin, PeopleNet’s vice president for sales and marketing, said the features of g3 will work on almost any handheld device because the software is “open source,” rather than proprietary.

Separately, PeopleNet said it added ALK Technologies’ CoPilot Live navigation software as an option on the g3 handheld computer. Transport Topics

Wash. Ports to Address Emissions

Ports in Seattle and Tacoma, Wash., along with the Port of Vancouver, British Columbia, will launch a coordinated program this month to reduce emissions from trucks, cargo ships and other port yard equipment, the Puget Sound Business Journal reported Monday.

The Washington ports will base their efforts on the Puget Sound Maritime Air Emissions Inventory released last month, which noted sources and amounts of various types of maritime-related air pollutants, the paper reported.

The ports plan will set annual targets for reducing emissions in five categories: ships, harbor craft, trucks, cargo-handling equipment and cranes, the paper said, citing port officials.

The survey will help them target the worst and most easily addressed sources, it reported. Transport Topics
