J.B. Hunt Transport Services said late Thursday that Kirk Thompson will step down as president and CEO at the end of the year and become the company’s chairman.

Thompson will be succeeded by John Roberts III, J.B. Hunt said in a statement. Roberts, 46, has been with the carrier for 21 years and currently serves as president of its dedicated contract services business.

Roberts will be succeeded in his DCS role by Nick Hobbs, currently vice president of operations for that unit. As chairman of the board, Thompson will succeed Wayne Garrison, who will remain a director at the company.

Thompson, 56, spent 23 years in the top spot at J.B. Hunt. He joined the company in 1973 and has held various positions, including chief financial officer and chief operating officer.

J.B. Hunt is ranked No.8 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
