Tight Security Surrounds Money Trucks As Europe Prepares to Convert to Euro

LONDON -- Thousands of trucks crammed full of money and shrouded in security crept out from secret warehouses around Europe earlier this month as banks began receiving shipments of euros in preparation for Jan. 1, when the new currency becomes legal tender in 12 countries.

Much has been made in the press of the task, which began Sept. 1, of delivering 60 billion coins and 16 billion bank notes over the next few months. It has been described in the press as the largest logistical operation in peacetime history.

The public will get “starter kits” of coins early to familiarize themselves with the new currency but, for security reasons, no notes will be distributed before the new year
