TL Leader Tests Engines; Gives None Passing Grade
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Officials at Schneider National, the nation’s largest truckload carrier, said they have tested several engines being marketed in response to an Oct. 1 federal emissions change deadline but have not found any that meet the company’s needs.
During interviews at Schneider headquarters, executives said they remained uneasy about the impact of a federal consent decree deadline, which requires most large engine makers to market lower-emission engines by October.
The officials detailed concerns they had with a Mercedes engine that is not subject to the October deadline, and with the cooled exhaust gas recirculation technology that several engine manufacturers have embraced to meet the emissions requirements.
