TMC Membership Plan Moves Ahead

Members of The Maintenance Council of American Trucking Associations likely would not be forced out of the organization over the ATA membership requirement if a proposal approved by ATA’s Management Committee gets the high sign from the ATA Executive Committee.

Details of the proposal were not available this week, but David Barefoot, senior vice president of ATA, said the proposal, which would amend the Wren strategic plan, addresses the concerns of many TMC members.

Under the strategic plan, an individual cannot participate in an ATA council unless his or her company is a member of ATA. Some 70% of the 1,080 persons who belong to TMC work for companies that are not ATA members. Many believe that their employers would rather lose the benefits of TMC than bear the cost of joining ATA. TMC has about 2,800 members in all, including associate members from industry suppliers.

The proposal will be brought before the Executive Committee June 20 during ATA’s summer leadership meeting.

TMC committee presents the details to its members in a special session during TMC’s annual meeting, June 12 through 14 at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, Ariz.
