Traffic Deaths Decline in Canada

Traffic fatalities in Canada appear to be at their lowest levels in 25 years, Transport Canada reported.

According to the department’s statistics, 1,986 people died on Canada’s roads in the first nine months of 1998, a 12% decrease from the same period in 1997. Based on the preliminary figures, the projected deaths from traffic accidents for 1998 will be 2,672, down from 3,064 in 1997, despite a significant increase in motor vehicle traffic.

Projected fatalities based on preliminary figures have typically been about 3% lower than final figures. Final statistics will be available next fall.

“This kind of progress is encouraging,” said Transport Minister David Collenette.
