Trailer Shipment Slump Continues

A continuing slump in the shipments of van trailers pulled overall trailer shipments down 8.1% in the first nine months of this year compared with the same period in 1999, according to the latest figures.

Trailer shipments by the end of September totaled 193,465 compared with 210,534 for the same period last year, the Truck Trailer Manufacturers’ Association reported based on numbers compiled by the Census Bureau.

Trailer shipments are used as a surrogate for sales figures — which are not available — to measure activity in the trailer manufacturing industry.
