Trailer Shipments Drop 37% in October

Shipments of truck trailers continued to mirror the decline in the truck sales market as the yearlong slump intensified during October.

According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, which reports trailer shipment figures as an indicator of industry activity, total trailer shipments during the first 10 months were 210,387, an 11.5% drop from the 237,705 shipped in 1999.

In the first nine months of the year, the year-to-year drop had been 8.1%.

For October, trailer shipments totaled 17,173, which was nearly 37% down from the 27,171 shipped in October 1999.
