Transport Topics took home silver awards in two categories at an American Society of Business Publication Editors regional awards luncheon April 13 in Washington, D.C.

TT's CDL or Bust digital series was honored in the Web Microsite/Special Section category.

The project followed seven students who allowed Transport Topics to document their goal of making a midlife career change and becoming truck drivers. Each student endured 16 days of grueling 10-hour training sessions in the hope of earning a commercial driver license. Through daily blog posts, photos and video, Transport Topics illustrated the rigors that a prospective truck driver goes through trying to earn that CDL.

Named to the award were: Digital Media Editor Gary Kicinski, former TT Staff Reporter David Elfin, freelance photographer John Sommers III, Web Director Michael Benfield and Marketing Director Tara McClelland.

The iTECH award came in the Special Supplement category for the July 2016 “On the Road to Automation” issue.

To help readers better understand developments surrounding self-driving technology and separate fact from fiction, Transport Topics dedicated the July/August issue to exploring the many facets of automated driving systems and related technologies, including truck platooning and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The original, in-depth reporting contained in the 24-page supplement captured the perspectives of major industry players, including truck manufacturers, technology developers, government regulators, industry analysts and researchers, as well as a sampling of the sentiments of fleet executives who may someday purchase trucks equipped with automated driving capabilities.

Named to the award were: Technology Editor Seth Clevenger, Production Manager Debra Devine, Senior Designer Joseph Terry, former TT Staff Reporter David Elfin and contributing writers Stephen Bennett and Steve Sturgess.

The CDL or Bust project is also a finalist for ASBPE national honors in the Web Microsite/Special Section category. Those winners will be announced May 18 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
