Government officials will have to tackle some tough issues if they hope to accommodate increased freight on the nation’s highways, Transportation Research Board members wrote in their outlook for the 21st century.
The board, part of the National Academy of Sciences, prognosticated in preparation for its annual meeting, held in Washington, D.C., from Jan. 9 to 13.
“In the new millennium, the freight transportation system will face challenges that will require the development of new paradigms of operations and planning,” wrote members of the Freight Transportation and Logistics Committee.
The challenges include a growing demand for both foreign and domestic freight transportation at the same time that roads and bridges are overburdened. Increasing the efficient use of existing roads, ports and bridges will be paramount, according to the committee.
