TravelCenters of America said Thursday that its fourth-quarter loss narrowed to $2.5 million, or 9 cents per share, from $30 million, or $1.71 per share, a year ago.

Revenue rose more than 20% to $1.92 billion, the company said.

The results showed an increase of 1.2% in fuel sales to 513 million gallons. Fuel revenue increased about 25% to $1.61 billion due to higher fuel prices.

Non-fuel sales, such as food, rose 10% to $307.4 million in the quarter.

“The slow, but continual improvement of the U.S. economy generally, and the improving financial condition and increased activity of the trucking industry in the U.S. specifically, impacted TA’s financial results during the 2011 quarter,” the company said in a statement.

TravelCenters’ loss from operations, which excludes interest and taxes, was $124,000 in the fourth quarter compared with a loss of $22.8 million the year before.
