Trimac Forms Fuel-Hauling Alliance in Northwest

Canadian-owned Trimac Transportation will merge its petroleum-hauling operations in Oregon and Washington with Harris Transportation Co. of Portland, Ore.

Trimac and Harris each will own half of the business, which will operate as Harris Transportation Co.

Brian Harris will serve as president and chief executive officer.

The merged company will transport petroleum exclusively from terminals in Portland and Eugene, Ore., and Seattle and Spokane, Wash.

Trimac will continue to move chemical products from separate facilities in the Pacific Northwest.

The combined operation will run 42 tractor-trailer rigs and generate annual revenue of about $8 million, company officials said.

“This gives the business enough critical mass to generate critical efficiencies,” said Bob Algar, vice president of corporate development for Calgary, Alberta-based Trimac Corp., the parent of Trimac Transportation of Louisville, Ky. “It also gives it enough size to serve our customers’ needs.”

Mr. Algar said the joint venture represents a new way of doing business for Trimac. “The concept holds a lot of promise,” he said.

Over the years, Trimac has acquired many companies throughout Canada and the U.S. and now is one of the largest bulk haulers in North America.

Mr. Harris said Trimac was strong in the Puget Sound area by virtue of an acquisition about four years ago, and Harris was strong in Portland because it has been in the petroleum distribution business there for 70 years.

“It made sense to marry the two leaders in both markets,” he said.

Officials from both companies said they expect the business to grow by increasing market share.
