Manufacturers Add Shifts as Sales, Orders Jump

uilders of heavy-duty trucks and engines said last week they are boosting production to meet rising demand, as sales and orders for 2004 have reached the fastest pace in years.

Volvo Trucks North America said it would increase daily output by adding a second shift, and Navistar’s International Truck and Engine Corp. said it was building more Class 8 trucks at three assembly plants.

Engine suppliers Cummins Inc. and Detroit Diesel Corp., a unit of DaimlerChrysler’s Freightliner LLC, both said they were also increasing production.
