Truck Carriers Prepare For Tighter Security

As the Transportation Department moved to implement new security measures at airports and border crossings, freight haulers are bracing for longer delays, closer scrutiny of drivers and higher costs as some of the consequences of last week’s terrorist strike.

“We already have seen an increase in security for pickup and delivery at military installations, federal buildings and all refineries,” said Jim McFarlin, director of safety and security for ABF Freight System in Fort Smith, Ark.

Drivers must have company identification and trucks are being searched before they go into facilities, McFarlin said. Appointments are more prevalent as well.
