Truck Makers Announce More Layoffs

Two more truck manufacturers have added their names to the list of companies instituting production cutbacks and layoffs after robust vehicle sales since 1998.

Freightliner Corp., citing projections of a 20% drop in Class 8 truck sales, has announced its first employee layoffs since 1996.

The announcement came May 5, that same day that competitor Mack Trucks reported plans to cut production at its plant in Winnsboro, S. C.

Three days later, International Truck and Engine Corp. said it would close its Canadian plant in Chatham, Ontario, for a week on June 5. The move comes five months after the company, formerly Navistar International, scheduled about 500 layoffs at the factory ("Truck Makers Set Production Cuts," 1-10, p. 1).
