The Trucker, a biweekly, national newspaper covering the truckload freight sector, was sold to Landmark Communications of Norfolk, Va.
“We wanted to keep growing and couldn’t do it without some partners or investors of some type, and this is what we ended up with,” Publisher Ray Wittenberg said about the Dec. 10 sale. “We’re going to keep the focus on truckload and grow.”
Landmark, which had $575 million in sales last year, owns four daily metropolitan newspapers and 38 non-daily papers. Ventures also include The Weather Channel on television and other businesses.
The Trucker of Little Rock, Ark., started in 1986. During its first 10 years, it was a regional newspaper, but has grown since 1996 to a nationwide circulation of 100,000, Wittenberg said. Revenue increased from $300,000 in its first year to $2.6 million in 1998.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The Trucker will continue to operate from its offices in Little Rock.
