Truckers Lend A Helping Hand

ORLANDO, Fla. – Truckers attending American Trucking Associations’ annual management conference took a break from debates over such issues as drivers’ hours of service to put in some hours of service of their own.

Sixty-eight volunteers toiled to clean up a local day-care center that assists low-income families and their children, instead of spending time at the many theme parks that make Orlando the top tourist destination in the world.

ATA members, the entire America’s Road Team and their family members were not only there to do a good deed, but also to brush aside some of the stereotypes about truckers. It was not the first time such a task was undertaken.

During the 1998 convention in New Orleans, a squad of 150 helpers from the organization promoted the industry by joining residents to spruce up a historic neighborhood school (11-2-98, p. 10).
