Trucking Blasts Hazmat Checks; NTTC Urges ‘Indefinite’ Delay

ational Tank Truck Carriers has urged the federal government to “indefinitely postpone” its plan to include fingerprint screening as part of its background-check process for drivers seeking authority to haul hazardous cargo.

Meanwhile, a number of other trucking groups — led by American Trucking Associations — sharply criticized the often-delayed fingerprinting plan, which was proposed by the Transportation Security Administration.

In comments filed recently with TSA, NTTC President Cliff Harvison said his group “remains fixed in its belief that . . . fingerprint-based background checks are ‘not ready for prime time.’ ”



He said, “To suggest that all of the individual states . . . will have the required processes, procedures, equipment and trained personnel in place . . . [on the existing schedule] is folly.”
