Trucking Firms Say Benefit of Ill. Open-Road Tolling Still to Come

lthough 17 of 20 main toll plazas on the Illinois Tollway have been converted to open-road tolling, tucking officials said they are not yet reaping any benefits because of higher tolls and construction slowdowns.

“I would say that they have lost money over the past year due to the increase in tolls and the delays associated with the construction,” said George Billows, executive director of the Illinois Trucking Association.

The tolls for truckers on the 274-mile road increased to $4 from $1.25 in Jan. 1, 2005. It was the first toll hike since 1983.
