Trucking Jobs Slip by 700 as Unemployment Rate Little Changed at 7.6%
Trucking lost 700 jobs in May as the U.S. unemployment rate was relatively unchanged at 7.6%, the Labor Department said Friday.
The unemployment rate increased from 7.5% in April, a four-year low.
Revised figures showed the trucking industry gained 12,500 in April, which was higher than the 11,700 rise reported last month.
On a nonseasonally adjusted basis trucking added 16,700 jobs in May.
U.S. payrolls expanded by 175,000 workers following a revised 149,000 increase in April that was smaller than first reported.
The overall transportation sector, which includes trucking, lost 3,900 jobs in May following a rise of 9,200 in April that had originally been reported as a 4,200 rise.
The 175,000 payrolls gain topped economists’ forecast of 163,000, Bloomberg News reported.
Private payrolls, which don’t include government agencies, jumped by 178,000 after a revised gain of 157,000 in April.
Manufacturing employment declined by 8,000 in May following a 9,000 decline in April.
