Trucking was the only mode that saw a rise in the value of U.S.-Nafta freight carried in June compared with the year earlier, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported Aug. 27.
Total Nafta value slid to $99 billion, down 3.8% from a year ago — thanks to a Canadian recession — federal data showed.
The value of commodities moved by truck rose 5.1%, BTS said. Trucks carried 65% of all U.S.-Nafta freight, making the industry the most heavily used mode for moving goods among the trading partners.
Trucks accounted for $33.2 billion of the $53.8 billion of imports, or 61.6%, and $31.2 billion of the $45.2 billion of exports, or 69%.
BTS said the value of shipments by rail fell 4.5%, by air 8.9%, by vessel freight 24.4% and by pipeline freight 40%, given the lower unit price of fuel shipments that rely on pipelines.
