Trucking Through the States

Before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, state trucking association executives were worried about the effect a slowing economy would have on tax collections, the future funding of roads and any temptation lawmakers might have to boost trucking’s share of the ante.

While many association executives remain concerned about rising fuel taxes and registration fees, there has been a marked shift in priorities to concerns about threats to domestic security, especially when it comes to transportation.

Before Sept. 11, “I had a list of issues to watch” in the state Legislature and regulatory agencies, Charles J. Brantley, president of the Florida Trucking Association, said. Now, “I don’t think any of those issues are going to materialize.”
