“Trucks are from Mars, buses are from Venus,” joked Stephen G. Sprague, chief operating officer of the United Motorcoach Association, comparing the differences between the two types of drivers to the popular book about male-female relationships.

Long-haul truck drivers use sleeper berths, truck stops or sleep at home. Tour bus drivers sleep in the same hotels and eat in the same restaurants as their passengers. Sometimes they are able to catch naps while their charges are away from the vehicle for a long time.

“For trucking, drive time is more important,” Sprague said. “For us, it’s waiting time.”
