Bill Graves, who served two terms as Kansas governor and whose family once owned a major truck line headquartered in the state, stepped into his new job as president of American Trucking Associations in January 2003.

Graves was only the seventh person to hold the top executive position on a permanent basis since the ATA federation was created in 1934. The first was Edward Loomis, followed by John Lawrence (1935-64), William Bresnahan (1964-76), Bennett Whitlock Jr. (1976-84), Thomas Donohue (1984-97) and Walter McCormick Jr. (1997-01).
