Volvo Trucks North America said United Auto Workers union members have ratified a five-year contract covering about 1,300 workers at its New River Valley heavy-duty truck plant in Dublin, Va.

The agreement, which took effect March 17, was ratified by UAW local #2069, Volvo said in a statement released Sunday. A tentative agreement was announced March 18.

“Working with the UAW, we’ve arrived at an agreement that increases Volvo Trucks’ long-term competitiveness in the North American market, while continuing to offer our employees a great quality of life,” said Denny Slagle, CEO of VTNA.

“Volvo gained two points of market share in 2010,” he said, adding that “the stability this agreement provides will help us continue that momentum as the market improves.”

Volvo said last August it was recalling about 270 workers to the plant to meet higher demand.

The company makes Volvo VN and VHD trucks at the New River Valley plant, and makes Volvo engines for North America in Hagerstown, Md.

VTNA and Mack Trucks are both part of Sweden-based Volvo AB.
