Universal Truckload’s Income Dips; Revenue Rises

Universal Truckload Services said late Thursday its second-quarter net income fell 12.6% to $4.7 million or 29 cents a share, from $5.4 million or 33 cents a year ago.

Operating revenue rose 11.4% to $178.2 million, including fuel surcharges of $17.8 million, the company said in a statement.

Truckload revenue rose 12.1% to $107.4 million, while brokerage revenue gained 4.2% to $43.1 million. Intermodal revenue jumped 21.3% to $27.7 million.

“Despite the effects of an inconsistent freight environment, our revenue continues to grow both organically and through the acquisitions we completed in the third quarter of 2006,” Chief Executive Officer Don Cochran said in a statement.

Universal is ranked No. 41 on the 2007 Transport Topics 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
