UPS, Deutsche Post Set for Showdown

Two companies with the same goal — to dominate the package delivery and logistics market worldwide — are gearing up to battle each other.

United Parcel Service, the dominant package carrier in the United States, and Deutsche Post AG, Germany’s government-owned mail service, each took significant steps last week to strengthen their position and set the stage for a market showdown.

In its first strategic move since going public, UPS agreed to acquire assets of Rollins Logistics and, in a separate transaction, sell its UPS Truck Leasing unit to Rollins Truck Leasing Corp. of Wilmington, Del.

The deal with Rollins is a prelude to what many analysts expect will be several major acquisitions by UPS to broaden the company’s services and increase its market penetration overseas.
