UPS Freight, Old Dominion Expand Illinois Terminals

Two major less-than-truckload operators have announced capacity expansion projects in northern Illinois.

UPS Freight added a terminal in Franklin Park, to handle shipment growth in the Chicago area and complement existing services at four nearby facilities. Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. opened a facility in Peru to supplant a smaller facility in Utica.

“Business growth in the greater Chicago area has driven demand for UPS Freight’s capabilities,” said Kevin Hartman, president of UPS Freight’s Central Region. “This new building addresses immediate needs and positions us for the continued expansion of our customers’ businesses.”

The UPS facility has 66 doors in a 28,000-square-foot building on 5 acres and is staffed by 90 employees.

Old Dominion said a significant increase in shipments at the previous facility prompted the move to the 85-door facility.

“We look forward to our partnership with the city of Peru and our footprint in the Illinois valley,” said Ty Anderson, manager of Old Dominion’s La Salle Service Center.

UPS is No. 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers. Old Dominion ranks No. 11.
