UPS Plans to Boost Holiday Hiring
UPS Inc. said it plans to hire as many as 95,000 seasonal workers, an increase of nearly 75%, to handle increased peak season holiday shipments.
The planned hiring is aligned with a $175 million program to expand package handling capacity after an unexpected surge in Internet commerce triggered delays of holiday shipments and reduced 2013 profits by $178 million. Last year, the peak season hiring was 55,000.
"We have initial volume forecasts from our customers and are starting the hiring process for our temporary peak season jobs,” said John McDevitt, senior vice president of human resources and labor relations. “Seasonal positions provide an excellent entry point for becoming a long-term UPS employee.”
The announcement said hiring is expected to be at least 90,000, beginning in October and continuing through January.
Other steps being taken to match holiday demand expectations are opening new buildings, expanding existing facilities, establishing mobile sorting centers and adding vehicles and aircraft or leasing equipment.
