U.S., Canada Agree on Peace Bridge Improvement Plan

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and Canadian officials announced an agreement to improve the American side of the Peace Bridge, which connects Buffalo to Fort Erie in Canada, the New York Times reported.

According to the agreement, the binational authority that runs the bridge, the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, will conduct a study then take steps to improve traffic flow on the American side, the Times reported.

Other bridge projects will be expedited, including a plan to start inspecting U.S.-bound trucks on the Canadian side of the bridge and a gateway ramp project, according to the paper.

The makeup of the bridge authority had been challenged by the Cuomo administration, but the governor pledged not to sign legislation passed last week in the New York Legislature intended to dissolve the organization, the Times reported.

The Peace Bridge was the second-busiest truck crossing along the U.S.-Canada border in 2011, the most recent year for which data are available, behind Detroit’s Ambassador Bridge.
