A nominee for a senior policy post at the U.S. Department of Transportation was recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate while other DOT nominees await votes before the full chamber or in committee.

The Senate easily confirmed Carlos Monje as under secretary of transportation for policy, the third most senior management role at the department. He received unanimous approval.

Monje is tasked with overseeing regulatory updates and participates in strategic planning operations within the Office of the Secretary. Monje assisted with transportation policy affairs during the Biden-Harris transition.

His experience includes stints at DOT as acting under secretary and assistant secretary for transportation policy, responsible for the implementation of surface transportation affairs, discretionary grants and economic development guidance, as well as other policy posts.

Others awaiting action in the Senate include Mohsin Raza Syed to be an assistant secretary of transportation, and Victoria Wassmer for the post of chief financial officer at the department.

Syed previously worked as chief counsel at the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Wassmer served for several years as a senior official at the Federal Aviation Administration.

Awaiting a vote at the Commerce Committee is Jennifer Homendy, who was nominated to lead the National Transportation Safety Board. She has served as an NTSB member since 2018. She told senators she would aim to improve the safety agency’s management systems. “Technology is constantly evolving and being integrated into our transportation system. For these reasons, we are initiating a workforce needs assessment to evaluate our existing workload and identify our immediate gaps and future needs in resources,” she said.

President Joe Biden also nominated Meera Joshi to become the administrator at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Amit Bose to the administrator role at the Federal Railroad Administration. Neither have come before the Commerce Committee. Joshi serves as FMCSA deputy administrator, and previously led the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. Bose serves as deputy administrator at FRA and had been with New Jersey Transit.
