USA Truck Inc. reported net income of $1.12 million, or 11 cents per share, to end a streak of first-quarter losses that covered eight years.
The company that ranks No. 50 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in the United States and Canada reported a revenue decline of nearly 9% to $132.9 million. The 2014 period loss was $1.59 million, or 15 cents.
The results included a trucking profit before interest and taxes of $615,000. Profit on that basis in the brokerage unit fell by almost half to $2.98 million.
The trucking business that lost $6.1 million last year was helped by lower operating costs, including fuel and maintenance. A weaker spot market hurt results, the company’s statement said.
“USA Truck is off to a solid start,” interim Chief Operating Officer Thomas Glaser said in a statement that noted the 10th consecutive quarter of year-over-year financial improvement.
