Utility Trailer, Phillips Connect Partner to Form Utility Connect

ORLANDO, Fla. — Trailer solutions firm Phillips Connect has teamed up with Utility Trailers to form Utility Connect, which matches a re-engineered version of Utility’s proprietary wiring harness with the Phillips Connect Smart7 nosebox.
The partnership and some new product rollouts were announced by Rob Phillips, founder and CEO of Phillips Connect, during a media event at the Technology & Maintenance Council 2022 Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition on March 6.
The Utility Connect product suite at launch will include GPS trailer tracking, light-out detection, intelligent ABS fault code reporting, tire inflation system monitoring and the ability to connect to additional sensors (sold separately) including door open/closed, ultrasonic cargo detection, and interior cargo cameras, among others.

It also has built-in expansion capabilities, offering over-the-air communication updates that will integrate with advanced tire pressure monitoring systems and Bendix’s Roll-Stability system, trailer weight, air tank pressure and optional brake pad wear-sensors for disc brakes. Future systems will include connection to reefer units and liftgates for monitoring status and maintenance.

Phillips Connect also announced the addition of advanced technology and intelligence to its Smart S7, Smart i-Box and Smart Q-Box noseboxes.
These seven-way noseboxes feature a conversion into an advanced GPS/Cellular/Sensor Hub using industry standard bolt patterns, and notifications of trailers’ location, status and condition to the cloud and displays on the Phillips Connect1 platform.
In addition, Phillips featured its latest trailer backup camera, BackupVision. The company offers two versions: wired for swing door trailers and wireless for roll-up doors. Both communicate via Wi-Fi to the cab’s electronic logging device or a driver’s smartphone. The camera system features a 180-degree view and more than 20 feet of visibility behind the trailer. When paired with a Phillips Connect gateway, operators can upload images to the cloud for video storage, for instance, when impacts are detected. Installation instructions and programming are offered via iOS or Android mobile applications.
