Van Slump Continues as Other Trailer Sales Rise

Slumping shipments of van trailers during the first six months of 2000 reversed an otherwise positive picture for truck trailer shipments and caused the total shipment figure to lag 3.3% behind the midyear figure in 1999.

According the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association, which reports figures gathered by the Bureau of the Census, total shipments for trailers of all types were 135,645 for the first six months of 2000 compared with 140,239 in 1999.

Shipment figures are used by TTMA as a surrogate for sales figures, which are unavailable. The Census Bureau figures are preliminary and subject to revision.
