Van Slump Drags Down Robust Shipment of Trailers

A drop in shipments of van trailers caused truck trailer shipments during the first five months of 2000 to lag 1999 numbers by 3% after taking three months to draw even with the previous year’s figures.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Census, which supplies figures used by the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association, shipments during the first five months totaled 112,954, compared with 116,436 in the first five months of 1999.

Shipment figures are used by TTMA as a surrogate for sales figures, which are unavailable. The Census Bureau figures are preliminary and subject to revision.

Van trailer shipments in the first five months of 2000 totaled 83,799, which was 9.3% below the 92,436 shipped in the first five months of 1999.
