The second North American Brake Safety Campaign of 2001 has been set for Sept. 5 at hundreds of locations in the United States and Canada.

Carried out by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, along with Canada’s Council of Motor Transport Administrators and safety agencies from both countries, some 2,000 inspectors will be checking an estimated 13,000 vehicles.

Called Operation Air Brake, the campaign features several international efforts a year, with the stated goal of reducing brake-related violations through increased driver awareness and by making certain all brake system inspection requirements are followed.

The brake-safety roadside inspections have been conducted several days each year since 1998.

During the May 2001 campaign, 16% of the 12,938 vehicles inspected were placed out of service.
