Vermont Officials Design Network for 53-Foot Trailers

A legislative panel approved a plan that would expand the roads 53-foot trailers can travel in Vermont.

The joint panel, comprised of members from the state House and Senate Transportation committees, endorsed a bill that would allow tractor-trailer combinations up to 72 feet to roam most major highways. Other roads could be designated for 53-footers with permits.

The proposal, which industry observers expect to pass, would settle the political debate that has raged in Vermont for several years between rural towns looking to keep big trucks out and local businesses trying to move the state into line with the industry’s standard trailer size.

The Dec. 15 recommendations come from a panel established by the legislature to settle the issue of truck access (8-2, p. 4). Lawmakers worked over the summer to arrive at a consensus that could win legislative approval.
