Vertical Cold Storage opened a Kansas City multimodal distribution site, the company said Jan. 7.
The 311,000-square-foot facility is set to employ over 100 full-time staff and focus on serving temperature-controlled food and beverage producers.
The facility features 47,000 pallet positions, blast freezing technology and multiple rooms convertible from 35 degrees Fahrenheit to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Located adjacent to the CPKC intermodal terminal in south Kansas City, Mo., the facility is also within 30 miles of BNSF, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern terminals.
“This state-of-the-art multimodal center has the latest technologies and equipment to support our customers’ distribution needs. Our highly trained and experienced Kansas City team is proud to support the wide variety of needs those customers bring to us every day,” said West Hutchison, president and CEO of Vertical Cold Storage.
Vertical — backed by real estate investment firm Platform Ventures — now operates 10 cold storage sites with a combined 2.4 million-square-foot capacity, a spokeswoman said Jan. 7.
The company’s facilities are situated near Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, N.C., Indianapolis and Miami, which are respectively the Nos. 3, 9, 14, 16 and 42 largest cities by population.

Vertical plans to acquire and integrate existing and developing greenfield cold storage facilities.
As of April 2024, Vertical ranked No. 6 on the Global Cold Chain Alliance’s North American Top 25 list of the largest refrigerated warehousing and logistics providers in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Since then, it bought a facility in Dothan, Ala., for an undisclosed sum and completed construction of the Kansas City facility. The Dothan facility focuses on poultry for export markets, largely through the ports of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mobile, Ala.; New Orleans; Panama City, Fla.; and Savannah, Ga.
Platform Ventures is the parent company of Platform Investments, which manages over $3.4 billion in assets.
