Vets Are Prime Candidates for Trucking Vacancies, Army Official Says
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Acting Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy praised the men and women leaving the service as candidates for positions in trucking at an industry event sponsored by Shell Oil.
Murphy said his father was a trucker, his cousin is driving in east Tennessee and he himself worked at one time for Roadway Package System.
“Trucking is important,” he said. “And I understand there is a driver shortage. That’s why I got my cousin to go into it. He just turned 22,” Murphy said.
He said veterans have character and most importantly know what it is like to take initiative, be part of a team, and “if they say they will be somewhere, they will, come hell or high water.”
Earlier, he met with a roundtable of nine military veterans, including drivers, recruiters and executives, to discuss industry labor issues.
Murphy is a former U.S. Army officer. He later participated in an announcement April 1 of a partnership between Fastport Inc. and Mid-American Trucking Show organizers on a military veteran hiring initiative.
