Video: Regulatory Landscape Awaits Drivers Entering Industry, Expert Says
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Commercial drivers starting their careers in the trucking industry need to be aware of myriad regulations to be efficient at their jobs, an industry expert told Transport Topics on March 24.
“As they branch out on their own, get their own authority, their own companies, there’s really a lot of regulations and compliance that they will have to keep up with,” Reghan Orman, associate general counsel at Apex Capital Corp., said at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The Fort Worth, Texas-based firm specializes in freight factoring for small-to-medium-sized trucking companies.
Specifically, Orman reminded drivers, both experienced and novice, to transition this year from paper logs to electronic systems that record their work hours. A federal mandate requires they do so by Dec. 18 of this year. The electronic logging device rule by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is a key regulation governing the industry, Orman emphasized.
“A lot of big companies who’ve been around for a long time, they’ve all switched to the ELDs. So for the small guys, they really need to make sure that they start looking at that and make that transition,” Orman said.
